Gingerbread House FAQ
Looking for answers before diving into a frosting-fueled decorating party? We've got you covered. From shelf life to snackability, here are answers to the most common questions we get about gingerbread houses and cookies.
Product FAQ
Can you eat Gingerbread Houses?
Yes! Absolutely Yes, if they are ours! Our gingerbread houses are 100% edible and made with fresh, premium ingredients. That said, whether you should eat them comes down to personal preference.
Here’s what to know:
- All our gingerbread house kits are baked fresh and taste as good as they look since they are made with the same recipe as our delicious Gingerbread Men cookies.
- If you're building your house early in the season and leaving it out for weeks as a decoration, it might dry out and become a bit too crunchy, and dusty.
- We recommend enjoying your gingerbread house within a week or two of decorating for the best flavor and texture.
So yes, you can absolutely eat your creation - but if it’s been on display for a while, it’s best to just admire it.
What ingredients are in your Gingerbread Products?
We use just one delicious recipe for both our cookies and gingerbread houses, made from:
- Hotel & Restaurant Flour
- GloryBee’s Unsulfured Homestyle Molasses
- C&H Bakers Special Sugar
- Soybean & Cottonseed Shortening
- Fresh Cinnamon, Cloves, and Ginger from Oregon Spice Company
Our icings are also handcrafted with care using:
- Royal Icing: Powdered Sugar, Filtered Water, Meringue (egg whites), Cream of Tartar, and Salt
- Decorating Icing: Powdered Sugar, Filtered Water, TIC Gum, Vanilla Powder, and Corn Syrup
The result? An aromatic, flavorful gingerbread that smells as good as it tastes.
How long do Gingerbread Cookies last?
It depends on how you store them! Our gingerbread cookies are made to last through the holiday season (and beyond).
Here’s how to keep them at their best:
- Room Temperature: Stored in an airtight container, gingerbread cookies can stay fresh for over a month.
- Refrigerated: Keep them in the fridge to extend freshness. They will become softer due to the humidity in the refrigerator.
- Frozen: Freeze decorated or undecorated cookies for up to 3 months - just thaw at room temperature before serving.
Bonus tip: Store cookies with a slice of apple or bread in the container to help retain moisture.
Do the kits come assembled?
You’ve got options! We offer both assembled and unassembled kits:
- Assembled Kits: Perfect for younger decorators, holiday decorating parties, or quick-start fun.
- Unassembled Kits: Great for DIY enthusiasts who love building from the ground up.
Every kit includes icing, candy, 1” & 2” people, and a base. Whether you’re a gingerbread rookie or a seasoned pro, you’ll have everything you need to create something magical.
How can I preserve my Gingerbread House year after year?
To save your decorated house from season to season:
- Store it in a clean, dry environment
- Avoid extreme heat and cold
- Seal it in a pest-proof bag and box
Freezing is also an option - just be sure it’s in an airtight container to protect against moisture.
How long do the houses last and how longe are they edible?
With proper storage, our gingerbread houses can last for years.
- Freshness: Our houses stay fresh to eat for up to 12 months, depending on how they’re stored and displayed.
- Long-Term Display: We’ve tested houses that held their scent and structure for up to 5 years!
Keep in mind, if your house has been sitting out, it may collect dust. While technically edible, it might not be appetizing.
Do your candies contain nuts?
We mix candy for our kits, and some of it may come from facilities that process nuts and other allergens. If you have food sensitivities, please exercise caution.
Do you sell houses I can assemble myself?
Yes! Most of our products are available in both assembled and unassembled versions.
Do the kits come with candy?
Yes! Every kit includes candies, icing, and decorations specific to the house type. For example, the doghouse kit features:
- Gingerbread fire-hydrant and dog cookies
- Dog bone candies
No matter the design, each kit is packed with fun details to help bring your creation to life.
